New Essay on the Legal Conservative Movement

My Modern Age essay on the legal conservative movement, "Countering the Counterrevolution Narrative," has been posted online: https://home.isi.org/countering-counterrevolution-narrative.

This was an especially gratifying essay to write. I have been a big admirer of Modern Age for many years. To publish in a journal started by some of my intellectual heroes, and one that is currently edited by some truly eminent scholars, such as Daniel McCarthy and Samuel Goldman, is a true honor.

This essay also gave me an opportunity to explore some of the themes central to my book project -- such as the divisions between traditionalism and libertarianism, the trajectory of American conservatism, and the role of originalism in the legal conservative movement. I will explore all of these issues, and others, in much greater depth in my book.

The next projects on my docket are: (1) finalizing a chapter on Justice Scalia's legacy in the legal conservative movement, and (2) drafting a chapter on the different phases of legal conservatism for an anthology on the history of the conservative movement.

In the meantime, I am scheduled to do a couple of book reviews, and I may write some online essays, but for the most part my attention will soon shift to research for my book. Over the next month or so, I will begin posting some interesting data I have been accumulating from reviewing National Review archives.
